Onward and Upward|“What is the most disgusting habit some people have?”

過去一周一個學生給了我這個題目:“What is the most disgusting habit some people have?”

What is the most disgusting habit some people have?

Of course I knew theoretically that working on dummies in dental school was completely different from working on real people after graduation, but still, nothing prepared me for the horrors that awaited me as a rookie dentist employed by a clinic located in a seedy area of town.

My very first patient was a meth addict (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CszeyYM6pQ4 ). Because he consumed meth by snorting, the fumes from the drug completely eroded two-thirds of his upper teeth. Those teeth that still existed were caked in food residue that had turned glue-like. His breath smelled like a public toilet that hadn’t been cleaned for months. To make matters worse, he was gay and tried to make a pass at me by licking my fingers! Ugh!

My next patient was someone who hadn’t brushed for two decades (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuerJU5huT8 ). So much plaque had piled up on his teeth that they were completely hidden. From the outside, they had the color and texture of parmesan cheese. They stank of rotten cheese, though.

Just when I thought things couldn’t be worse, I met my third patient. His teeth were in better condition than the first two, but he kept complaining of a throbbing pain in a molar。 When I peered at that tooth, I discovered a nest of maggot larvae. One was already hatched; it wiggled its way out of the patient’s mouth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMr08AFgqxg ). The nurse fainted and fell on the ground with a loud thud.

People think their Google search histories contain their innermost secrets, but every dentist knows it is our mouths that give the most honest picture of how we have been living our lives.
