Onward and Upward|

A day in the life of a nail art enthusiast

It has been a while since I last opened a ring-pull can.

I have been steering clear of canned products at the supermarket that have to be opened this way for the same reason the wheelchair bound steer clear of tall cabinets when remodeling their kitchens. In my case, the “handicap” in question is natural nails so long that their whites extend a good 10 millimeters beyond my fingertips.

I can easily find alternatives to canned food and drink, but in other areas of everyday life, I am not so lucky. When it’s time to change my bedding, I face the prospect of having to pull the corners of my fitted sheet over my 13-inch mattress like an acrobat about to cross a tightrope – one false move, and any of the nails I’ve spent months growing may snap. When I scrub stubborn grease off my pots and pans, I have to utter a prayer under my breath – please, God, don’t let my nails break. And don’t get me started on the awkward act of wiping my behind.

So far, the best advice I’ve received on how to prevent nail breakage came from a beauty Youtuber: “if you go through life pretending there is paint on your nails waiting to be dried, you will naturally be super careful with them.” Still, I have to accept that despite my 24/7 vigilance, sooner or later, a nail or two (or even three!) will fracture, and my only consolation is that until my nails grow back to their full length, I can buy canned drinks without worrying that I won’t be able to open them.
