Despite the rain we had a great day this weekend. We went to the city center to help out at a waffle store opened by a Hong Kong immigrant. We gave out waffle for people to try. Lastly, we bought some of the waffles for ourselves.
My rewrite
There are times when a waffle isn’t just a waffle.
For the Hong Kong diaspora in the UK, the Hong Kong-style egg waffle – distinctive for its crunchy exterior and soft, moist center – can be a stand-in for the home they’ve left behind. Partaking of this snack as a group can therefore seem like a ritual as solemn as the Lord’s Supper. Once a Hong Konger, always a Hong Konger.
