不少學生以為提升英文是技術性工作，掌握了grammar, vocabs, sentence structure, 和 literary techniques，就自然能寫出好文章。
但想文章出眾，廣闊的知識面也很重要。以下面這個案例為例，題目是 “Which is better, private schools or public schools?” 學生先這樣表達她的觀點：
“Private schools are definitely better than public ones because the classes are smaller and so students get more individual attention.”
礙於在公立學校讀書的她沒讀私校的經歷，身邊也沒朋友讀私校，所以她往下寫不出內容。
我在她面前這樣rewrite她的段落：
If you walk into a classroom at Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the most prestigious private high schools in the US, you may think you have just stepped into a private room at a Chinese restaurant. Instead of endless rows of desks facing a blackboard, there is only a big round table in the middle. A dozen students are seated around it; their teacher is among them. The classroom layout broadcasts this message loud and clear: “Your teacher is here to engage you as an equal.”
然後，學生問：「如果我知道你所知道的，我該怎麼寫？」
我說，知識是長年累月一點一點積累的，有不斷學習的心，知識面自然會廣，當下這一刻，至少你剛學到一家私校如何引導學生，以後你作文不就多一個illustration可以用嗎？
