澳洲西岸小鎮埃克斯茅斯（Exmouth）在當地時間周四（20日）出現罕見天文現象「日全食」，吸引大約2萬人到場直擊日全食經過，不少人帶備特殊的太陽眼鏡。今次天文奇觀由上午11時29分48秒開始，全程58秒，整個太陽被月亮遮擋。不少天文愛好者以不同方式紀錄全程再放上社交平台分享；美國太空總署亦安排全程網上直播並配合專家講解，在Facebook、YouTube及Twitter累計吸引到過百萬人次觀看影片。

香港在中午時段原本亦有機會欣賞到日偏食，但可惜多雲有雨，最終市民錯過今次罕見的天文現象。尖沙嘴太空館就在館內安排了其他國家地區日食的直播，有工作人員在旁講解。

日全食是十分罕見的天文現象，全球每百年大約只會出現7次，而要在同一個地方觀賞到日全食奇觀，平均更要相隔約400年，故一生人只可能在同一個地方觀賞到一次日全食。下一次在全球範圍發生的日全食同樣可在澳洲觀測，估計在2028年7月出現，日全食軌跡會通過澳洲多地，而大半個澳洲，還有印尼、新加坡和馬來西亞等預計都有日偏食。至於下一次在香港境內發生的日全食，估計要到2881年才會出現。

日食是太陽被月球掩蓋的自然現象，當太陽、月球、地球排成一條直線，地球會進入月球的本影或半影，太陽光完全被月球的陰影遮蓋，就會出現日全食。
