近幾年，移民到海外的港人有幾十萬，當中有相當數目的學童，因優秀的學校就那麼多，所以變得更難考入。

我學生群中，就有已考了一次但不成功的學生，dream school 給的feedback是 writing and reading 只是average，要above average才行，所以他的父親找上我。學生每次做完作文練習會問我：「以我這個寫作水平，能考入心儀的學校嗎？」，可見他壓力不少。

通常這類學生水平不會太差，他們面對的問題是如何寫出有足夠亮點的文章，讓他們從average applicants中脫穎而出，增加得到學位的機會。

讓自己的文章脫穎而出的秘訣很多，其中一個是在文中引用人盡皆知的名畫。因大家都熟悉名畫裏的畫像，只要把自己文章裏的細節跟畫像聯繫上，就能輕易地寫出精緻的描述，下面提供兩個examples。

 

Example one

Student

Shells are both attractive in appearance and practical in usage.

 

My rewrite

Because I am so accustomed to associating shells with beauty – think Botticelli’s golden-haired Venus perching on a scallop shell as she bursts forth from the sea – I seldom remember shells serve a practical purpose too.

 

Example two

Student

She had a look of horror on her face.

 

My rewrite

It took me a moment to put my finger on why her display of dread looked so familiar: she was Munch’s figure in “The Scream,” her eyes bulging with fear as her lips contorted themselves into a perfect oval.
